A Brief History of Covenant Health

Covenant Health is a comprehensive health system established in 1996 by the consolidation of Fort Sanders Health System, Knoxville, Tennessee, and MMC HealthCare System, parent company of Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

With headquarters located in Knoxville, the system provides comprehensive services throughout East Tennessee. Covenant Health is a community-owned organization committed to improving the health of the people it serves. The organization is governed by a voluntary board of directors composed of community leaders and medical professionals.

Covenant Health includes six acute care hospitals in East Tennessee: Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Fort Loudoun Medical Center in Loudon, Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center in Sevierville and Roane Medical Center in Roane County. It also includes Peninsula Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in East Tennessee's Blount County.

In addition to the hospitals Covenant Health's primary member organizations include the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center, Thompson Cancer Survival Center, Thompson Cancer Survival Center at Methodist, Peninsula (a division of Parkwest Medical Center), Fortress Corporation, Fort Sanders West Diagnostic Center, Fort Sanders West Outpatient Surgery Center, Nanny's Nursery, Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center, Covenant Medical Management and Covenant HomeCare.

Covenant Health operates the Fort Sanders Nursing Department, a baccalaureate nursing education program at Tennessee Wesleyan College, in Athens, Tenn.

Its philanthropic affiliates include Fort Sanders Foundation and the Thompson Cancer Survival Center Foundation in Knoxville, Methodist Medical Center Foundation in Oak Ridge and the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation in Sevierville. Funds raised by the foundations provide services, equipment and other resources for excellence in patient care.

Approximately 8,000 people are employed by Covenant Health and its member organizations. Working together with approximately 1,000 affiliated physicians, these healthcare professionals deliver quality care to thousands of patients throughout East Tennessee.
