Frequently Asked Questions
We are committed to patient education and transparency in our care. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please contact us for a consultation.
What are the stages of cancer?
Cancers are categorized into four stages, typically written with Roman numerals. Speaking very broadly, Stage I means the cancer is small and localized, while Stage IV means the cancer has spread to other parts of your body. Our doctors complete diagnostic testing for an accurate diagnosis on behalf of every cancer patient we see.
What is a personal nurse navigator?
Your oncology nurse navigator coordinates your care, manages your symptoms, and helps you understand what to expect during the treatment process. The nurse navigator is just one member of your dedicated cancer support team who is with you on this journey every step of the way.
What’s included in cancer care support services?
Covenant Health provides a range of financial, counseling, dietary, social, and spiritual support services for cancer patients. Thompson Cancer Survival Center features counseling services and regular sessions with a dietician as part of our approach to comprehensive cancer care.
How much does cancer treatment cost?
We recognize that cancer treatment is a significant financial burden for most people. Insurance plans commonly cover a portion or all of radiation therapy costs. Chemotherapy costs can vary depending on the type and frequency of treatment you receive. Medicare also offers coverage for chemotherapy. Your health is our primary concern. Our financial counselors are ready to meet with you to discuss the range of financing options available to you. Visit our financial assistance page for more details.
What is proton therapy?
Proton therapy is a unique and trusted form of radiation therapy that precisely targets tumors while significantly sparing surrounding healthy tissues. This approach decreases the risk of side effects while delivering favorable outcomes.
What is the Gamma Knife program?
We’re proud to be one of only two centers in Tennessee offering non-invasive Gamma Knife technology, a revolutionary technique used to treat some brain conditions previously considered inoperable. Contact us to learn if you may be eligible for this treatment.
What is 3D mammography?
Covenant Health offers 3D digital mammograms (digital tomosynthesis) for a complete visualization of the breast tissue. Compared to traditional mammography, this 3D approach leads to more accurate diagnoses.
Is cancer treatment painful?
We promote a culture of transparency and honesty in our care. Pain is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment, your care team members are available to discuss healthy, sustainable pain management options. If you have questions about palliative care or symptom relief, please call us.
Can advanced cancer be cured?
With advanced cancer, we often think of managing the disease and mitigating its effects rather than completely curing it. It’s important to understand that not all cancer diagnoses are terminal. Many cancer survivors live for decades after their initial treatments.
