Well-Woman Exams at Covenant Health
Annual gynecological exams are important for routine women’s healthcare. Schedule yours today.
What Is a Well-Woman Exam?
A well-woman exam, or gynecological exam, is a routine health check-up with a women’s health specialist to assess overall well-being with a focus on reproductive health. This exam is an important part of preventive healthcare and provides a great opportunity to discuss any concerns face-to-face with your physician. A well-woman exam typically includes three major components: a breast exam, pelvic exam and Pap smear.
What to Expect During a Breast Exam?
It is important to conduct monthly self-breast exams to know what is normal for your breasts so you can notice small changes and report them right away. Your provider will advise you on the correct way to do a self-breast exam and can perform a clinical breast exam during your annual visit to feel for any changes. The The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that women get clinical breast exams:
- Every one to three years for women 20-30 years old.
- Every year for women over age 40.
Talk with your us about your risk factors and whether to have a clinical breast exam.
What to Expect During a Pelvic Exam?
We recommend that you get a pelvic exam every year as soon as you become sexually active, regardless of age. This important exam allows your provider to check the pelvic area for changes and signs of disease such as inflammation, masses or fibroids.
During your pelvic exam, we can perform a Pap smear to test for cells in the cervix that could lead to cancer. During a Pap smear, your provider will gently remove cells from your cervix and send them for testing to check for human papillomavirus (HPV) or other signs of cervical cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions
We are committed to patient education and transparency in our care. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please contact us for a consultation.
Who needs a well-woman exam?
We recommend you receive an annual pelvic exam as soon as you become sexually active, regardless of age. This important exam allows our women’s healthcare specialists to monitor the female organs for changes in size or shape and signs of disease like inflammation, masses or fibroids.
How often to get a well-woman exam?
You should consider seeing a women’s healthcare specialist every 12 months. The benefits of annual well-woman exams include:
- Possible early detection of treatable conditions, such as infections or cancer
- Detection of other problems, such as changes to the skin in your pelvic area
- A better understanding of your body
- Reassurance about your sexual and reproductive health
How to prepare for a pelvic exam?
If you have a menstrual cycle, try to schedule the exam for a time when you are not on your period. Mid-cycle is often recommended. It’s also advised to avoid sex, vaginal sprays, powders or douches for 48 hours before your appointment. Be prepared to discuss your medical history, lifestyle habits, sexual activity, menstrual cycle and any current symptoms or concerns.
Will I need to have any tests?
Depending on your age and other factors, your provider may recommend a cervical biopsy, STI testing, osteoporosis screening (bone density test) or breast cancer screening (mammogram), among other tests.
