Methodist Medical Center Earns No. 1 Spot in the Country
Covenant Health has earned national recognition as one of the most socially responsible health systems in the United States, with multiple hospitals receiving top honors on the 2026 Lown Hospitals Index.
Covenant Health’s Methodist Medical Center claimed the No. 1 ranking among all acute care hospitals in the country. As a system, Covenant Health ranked No. 7 overall among all U.S. health systems, with four hospitals earning a coveted place on the Honor Roll.
Four Covenant Health Hospitals Named to Honor Roll

Out of 2,718 acute care hospitals evaluated, only 123 achieved straight “A” grades across all three pillars: equity, value and outcomes. Four Covenant Health hospitals were among those recognized:
- Methodist Medical Center: No. 1 in the nation, five-time Honor Roll
- Covenant Health Fort Loudoun: No. 24 nationally, five-time Honor Roll
- Covenant Health’s Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center: No. 38 nationally, five-time Honor Roll
- Covenant Health’s Cumberland Medical Center: No. 87 nationally, four-time Honor Roll
Notably, only four hospitals nationwide have achieved Honor Roll designation five times. Those hospitals include Baystate Wing Hospital in Massachusetts, Covenant Health Fort Loudoun, Fort Sanders Regional and Methodist Medical Center.
Leadership Reflects on National Recognition

“This is an extraordinary honor and a reflection of our team’s unwavering commitment to our patients, our community and one another,” stated Jeremy Biggs, chief administrative officer of Methodist Medical Center. “To earn this distinction among 2,718 hospitals, and to be recognized for the fifth time on the Honor Roll, is especially meaningful. I’m incredibly proud of our physicians, nurses and staff whose dedication makes this possible and ensures Methodist Medical Center continues to lead in both clinical excellence and the health and well-being of those we serve.”

Mike Belbeck, executive vice president of operations for Covenant Health said: “Being recognized by the Lown Institute is a meaningful affirmation of the values that guide our work every day. From providing vital, unsubsidized charity care to those in need to expanding access through our partnerships, we are committed to meeting people where they are. Partnerships with community programs like Free Medical Clinic, Project SEARCH and Knox Area Rescue Mission are critical to improving the quality of life in our region. These efforts reflect our ongoing mission to improve health, strengthen communities and ensure compassionate care for all.”
What the Lown Hospitals Index Measures
The Lown Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility is the only national ranking that evaluates hospitals across a comprehensive set of criteria, including:
- How equitably care is delivered
- How well hospitals invest in their communities
- Whether patients receive high-value care that avoids unnecessary procedures
- More than 50 additional metrics contributing to overall performance, including clinical outcomes and patient safety
“Honor Roll status is earned by hospitals meeting the highest standards across the breadth of our metrics,” said Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute. “They aren’t just clinically excellent, they’re deeply committed to the communities they serve and work hard to ensure all patients get the care they need.”
Advancing Health Equity and Community Impact
These recognitions affirm Covenant Health’s mission to deliver exceptional care that improves lives and strengthens the communities they serve.
Belbeck was a guest of the Lown Institute and its president, Dr. Saini, for the organization’s annual Social Responsibility Honors virtual awards presentation. He attended alongside Ed Banos, president and chief executive officer of University Health in San Antonio, joining healthcare leaders from across the country to recognize institutions advancing equity, value and patient-centered care.
During the event, Banos and Belbeck shared insights and experiences that have helped their respective organizations achieve the milestones recognized by Lown, highlighting a shared commitment to high-impact, socially responsible healthcare leadership.
