“My approach to midwifery care is grounded in respect, empowerment and evidence-based practice,” Shannan said. “I believe every person deserves individualized care that honors their choices and values.”

When you meet Shannan Calhoon, CNM, you feel heard right away. She builds trust from the first visit and stays by her patients through every step of care. At Covenant Health Hamblen Women’s Care, she helps women feel safe, informed and confident during some of the most important moments of their lives.

A Life of Service and Experience

Shannan brings decades of experience to East Tennessee. She began her career as an Army medic in 1991 and later became an Army nurse. Her first assignment placed her on a labor and delivery unit, where she worked alongside midwives. That experience shaped her path.

Today, she stays current on research and partners with leading professional groups. This helps her provide care that is safe, current and focused on what patients truly need.

“Advocating for women’s rights and autonomy, while trusting the physiology of normal birth, is central to modern midwifery practice,” she said.

Advanced Care Close to Home

At Covenant Health, care is backed by advanced tools and strong clinical support. Through her involvement with the Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care, Shannon helps bring best practices and resources back to Covenant Health Hamblen Women’s Care. This work ensures local patients benefit from statewide efforts to improve maternal outcomes, including access to blood pressure monitors and education for those at risk of developing preeclampsia

Shannon collaborates with care teams to implement these evidence-based strategies, helping translate program guidance into real-world care for patients. By connecting Covenant Health to this broader initiative, she plays a key role in strengthening early detection and prevention efforts within the community.

“Promoting the need for patient education about preeclampsia warning signs is such an important message,” Shannon said. “Empowering patients with knowledge and tools can dramatically reduce severe maternal health risks.”

Building Generations of Trust

Shannan believes listening is the heart of great care.

“Taking the time to listen to the patient is the key to truly exceptional healthcare,” she said. “Patients feel valued when care is tailored to their unique needs.”

Over the years, Shannan has built relationships across entire families. She has cared for mothers, daughters and even grandmothers.

“One of my favorite parts of being a midwife is caring for multiple generations,” she said. “That continuity and trust are what make this work so meaningful.”

A Strong Team Behind Every Patient

That care is also strengthened by Covenant Health’s team approach. Nurses, physicians and midwives work together to deliver safe, coordinated care.

“During a recent complex delivery, our team worked seamlessly to ensure safety and comfort for both mother and baby,” she said. “That level of collaboration allows me to focus on building trust and providing individualized care.”

Committed to Our Community

Covenant Health’s investment in the community ensures families across the region have access to expert care close to home.

“I am so proud to be part of a healthcare organization that truly prioritizes the needs of our community,” she said.

Outside of work, Shannan values family. She and her husband will soon celebrate 30 years of marriage. Their daughter is serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa.
