Aquatic therapy is an exercise program that is designed and led by a physical therapist and performed in water in a pool. Exercise performed in water provides buoyancy and decreases the pain and stress on weight-bearing joints while providing resistance to help build muscle strength and mobility.
Benefits of aquatic therapy:
- Increased strength and motion
- Increased flexibility
- Improved balance
- Increased muscular endurance
- Improved body composition through weight loss and muscle toning
- Improved conditioning level
- Reduced pain
Patients who have benefited include those with:
- Arthritis
- Low back pain
- Knee and hip replacement
- Shoulder disorders
- Recovery from joint or spine surgery
- Orthopedic injuries
- Sports-related injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Fibromyalgia
- Generalized weakness
- Obesity
Flotation equipment is available to assist patients in the pool. Knowing how to swim or getting hair wet are not requirements for aquatic therapy.
