Frequently Asked Questions

We are committed to patient education and transparency in our care. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please contact us for a consultation.

What to expect during a mental health assessment?

During your first visit your provider or mental health professional will work with you to identify your behavioral health concerns, symptoms and history. They may ask about your emotional state, thoughts, behaviors, relationships, work or school performance, and lifestyle habits. If it’s determined that medications will be helpful, your doctor may prescribe medications or order a follow-up appointment for a medication evaluation.

What to bring to your first appointment

  • Insurance Cards
  • Photo ID
  • Medications

Children under 16 must be accompanied by their legal guardian or parent, not a step-parent. Bring any legal paperwork regarding your child.

Are mental health assessments covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans cover psychological assessments, but as with any coverage, different companies may have different requirements. Some insurance providers may require a referral from a primary care physician, so it’s important to check your description of plan benefits.

Who performs a mental health assessment?

Licensed mental health counselors and psychiatric nurse practitioners typically perform mental health assessments, but primary care physicians are also qualified to perform these screenings and are often the first point of contact for patients seeking help.
