A nurse at Parkwest Medical Center was honored recently with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the superhuman efforts nurses give every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.

Congratulations to Trevor, a nurse on our cardiothoracic stepdown unit for being recognized with the DAISY Award. He was nominated by a patient’s wife for the respectful care he provided to her husband.

Trevor’s Nomination

“When we came into Parkwest knowing that David’s heart was in need of a heart catheterization, we were stressed and frightened. We quickly found out that open heart surgery would be part of the doctors’ plan for his healing. After a major surgery like that we had no idea what to expect. We spent a few days in CCU, and then were sent to a “step down” unit on the 3rd floor. This is where Trevor entered our life. Trevor combines clinical expertise with compassion and empathy. We felt he was a true advocate, not only for the hospital, but for us personally. He easily earned our trust and never failed to answer our questions regarding David’s medical needs.

Trevor had a gentle yet professional way of assuring us with each step. He is a wonderful communicator, and we felt we could depend on him for needs we had. When you have such a health storm in your life like this, it gives you an incredible sense of vulnerability. You are constantly reaching out for that hope and assurance that your health experience is normal and that you will heal. I think we have always tried to be in control of every event in our lives, but this was a time that we had to depend on someone else to help us get through and educate us as to what to expect. This hospital is blessed indeed to have a nurse life Trevor on their staff. He championed us, taught us, cared for us and helped us through one of the most traumatic times in our lives. Thank you, Trevor, for your care. You are the best!”
