A nurse at Parkwest Medical Center was honored recently with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the superhuman efforts nurses give every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.

Congratulations to Maia, a nurse in Parkwest’s Childbirth Center, for being recognized with the DAISY Award. Maia was nominated by a patient and her husband, for providing comforting care during the birth of their son.

Maia’s 1st Nomination

“Maia is the type of nurse every nurse should strive to be. We started the morning of March 26 very routine as I was being induced. From the moment she introduced herself I knew I had been blessed with a good nurse, I just didn’t know how good yet. I decided to go un-medicated and a few hours later I made a joke to Maia about hoping I was progressing. Maia being proactive, offered a cervix check and thank God she did. She then discovered my prolapsed chord and made the phone calls needed to get me in the OR quickly. I was terrified. Maia looked at me and said, ‘you’re in the best place for this, I will not leave you.’ I will remember that moment for the rest of my life. As scared as I was, knowing Maia was there and would advocate and care for me brought me some peace. I woke up from my C-section to a perfect baby boy and I know Maia played a huge part in that. The whole evening, she went above and beyond to help me understand what happened and take care of me while I felt helpless. I truly wish I could put into words not only the nurse Maia is, but the person she is. She has a light shining around her that is hard to explain. Any patient who gets to have Maia as their nurse is blessed and I’m so thankful I was one of them. Your hospital is blessed to have her.”

Maia’s 2nd Nomination

“Maia was the best nurse to my wife while we were there for the birth of our son. Things didn’t go as planned and my wife had to have a emergency C-section but Maia made sure we both knew what was going on and did her best to calm us down during the terrifying time. She answered all of my wife’s questions and also helped me learn how to change a diaper, swaddle etc. since my wife had to be in bed for the first day. She was the best nurse we had during our stay and really the best nurse we’ve ever experienced in general. I’m thankful she was our nurse on the best and scariest day of our life. I truly believe she is the reason we have our son, and we will remember her forever.”

Nominated by: Jeremiah, a patient’s husband.
