For more than 30 years, John Adams, MD, has been a cornerstone of Covenant Health’s infection prevention efforts. His work has shaped how we protect patients, support our care teams, and respond to public health challenges—including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Adams joined Covenant Health as an infectious disease physician and system epidemiologist. Over the years, he has led initiatives that strengthened patient safety and advanced best practices across our hospitals. From guiding antibiotic stewardship to collaborating with nursing teams across our hospitals, Dr. Adams championed safety and accountability at every level.

President of Covenant Medical Group, Monty Scott, shared, “Dr. Adams joined the CMG team several years ago and it has been great to see his dedication to our community and system up close.”

Dr. Adams’ Impact

Under his guidance, Covenant Health implemented systemwide infection protocols. He developed education programs that empowered staff to deliver safe, high-quality care. His leadership during the COVID‑19 pandemic was especially impactful, helping our organization and community navigate uncertainty with expertise and calm. He was among the first Covenant physicians to receive the COVID‑19 vaccine, setting an example for others at a critical moment.

“Dr. Adams is a phenomenal doctor, leader, colleague, and friend,” said Mandy Halford, MD, Covenant Health’s Chief Medical Officer and Chief Medical Informatics Officer. “He has spent his career serving Covenant Health and our community and living out our mission of improving the quality of life through better health. I personally want to thank John for his expertise, dedication, loyal, and mentorship over the years. He will certainly be missed.”

Transitioning Out of Epidemiology

This year, Dr. Adams will transition his epidemiology responsibilities to Henry Shiflett, DO. This handoff reflects Dr. Adams’ commitment to continuity and excellence. While stepping away from epidemiology, he will continue serving patients through virtual infectious disease consults. He plans to fully retire in September 2026.

Dr. Adams’ influence will endure through Dr. Shiflett’s leadership and through the infection prevention culture he helped build. Covenant Health is grateful for Dr. Adams’ service, his dedication to patient safety, and his legacy of collaboration and innovation.
