Thompson Cancer Survival Center was born from the vision of B. Ray Thompson, a Tennessean who believed residents of our Tennessee area deserve world-class cancer care, right here in Knoxville, TN. 

Since 1989, Thompson Cancer Survival Center has provided hope and care to patients and their families fighting cancer, by being the first in our East Tennessee region to offer innovative cancer treatments and clinical trials.

Gamma Knife technology

Gamma Knife is a non-invasive, stereotactic radiosurgery tool to treat head and neck cancers. It is an alternative to traditional surgery and is the newest technology to treat brain disease – including conditions previously considered inoperable. 

Covenant Health is one of only two centers in Tennessee to use Gamma Knife, and the only center east of Memphis with Gamma Knife technology. Learn more.

Breast Cancer Screenings

Covenant Health Breast Centers and Thompson Comprehensive Breast Center offer mammography and other services to diagnose breast cancer in Tennessee. 

Many of our centers offer services such as core biopsy and breast ultrasound. Some of our imaging centers also offer 3-D mammography services, which allow smaller cancers to be detected earlier, even in women with dense breast tissue.

Treatment for Barrett’s Esophagus

The Center of Excellence for Barrett’s Esophagus at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, TN,  successfully treats patients with Barrett’s esophagus in Tennessee as well as throughout the country and abroad, every year. 

The Center also serves as a training center for other medical professionals, hoping to advance their knowledge and understanding of how to treat Barrett’s esophagus.
