A bone density test determines if you have osteoporosis – a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and more likely to break. It makes it possible to know your risk of breaking bones before the fact.

A bone density testing uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The bones that are most commonly tested are located in the spine, hip and forearm.

X-ray imaging uses electromagnetic radiation to create pictures of the inside of your body. In the hospital setting, X-rays are emitted as individual particles that pass through the body and then create an image. Radiation protection and minimization of patient exposure is always considered for patient safety.

This process allows the physician to see images from inside the body on a TV monitor. Fluoroscopy is often used to see the digestive tract. It also can help doctors locate a foreign object in the body, position a catheter or needle for a procedure, or set a broken bone.
