No one wants to hear the words “brain tumor” or “neurosurgery” at the doctor’s office. But for many patients at Covenant Health, they know they’re in good hands with Christopher Carroll, MD.
As a neurosurgeon at Covenant Health’s Parkwest Medical Center, Dr. Carroll helps patients navigate some of the most challenging decisions of their lives. Whether treating a brain tumor, traumatic injury or spinal condition, he combines advanced surgical techniques with a simple philosophy: every decision should be guided by what matters most to the patient.
Dr. Carroll’s Start in Neurosurgery
Dr. Carroll joined Knoxville in 2025 after 13 years in the military, including seven years as an active-duty Navy neurosurgeon. During his service, he led trauma programs, trained surgical teams for combat environments and cared for patients in some of the most demanding settings imaginable.
Today, he is expanding access to advanced neurosurgical care in our community. He works diligently to provide the individualized treatment each patient needs.
“How do I maximize the amount of life in a person’s remaining days?” Dr. Carroll said. “Then, how do I maximize the amount of days in that life?”
Advancing Care in Our Community
Since joining the team, Dr. Carroll has introduced new techniques for brain tumor surgery. This includes fluorescence-guided procedures that help surgeons identify cancerous tissue more clearly during an operation. Under a special microscope, tumors glow bright pink. This allows surgeons to remove more of the tumor while protecting healthy brain tissue.
He has also helped expand minimally invasive approaches. These use smaller openings and specialized tools to reach deep brain and spine conditions, causing less disruption to surrounding tissue.
His goal is simple: provide patients with safer procedures, faster recoveries and more options.
“We’re working to make sure people don’t feel like they have to leave East Tennessee for complex neurosurgical care,” he said. “The expertise and technology are right here.”
Seeing the Person Behind the Diagnosis
What sets Dr. Carroll apart is not just the procedures he performs. It’s how he approaches each patient.
His ability to translate complicated medical information into plain language helps patients feel informed, confident and involved in their care.
“If a patient doesn’t understand what I’m explaining, that’s not a problem with them,” he said. “That’s a problem with me.”
Neurosurgery often involves high-stakes decisions. He takes time to understand what matters most to each person before recommending surgery. For some patients, the goal may be simply living longer. For others, it may be maintaining independence, mobility, speech or the ability to spend meaningful time with loved ones.
Dr. Carroll believes those priorities should drive every treatment plan.
“It’s not just about what we can do,” he said. “It’s about what we should do based on a patient’s goals and wishes.”
A Team Effort
While Dr. Carroll performs complex surgeries, he is quick to credit the team around him.
He says exceptional care happens when experts work together toward a common goal. This includes operating room staff, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, physicians and care teams across Covenant Health.
“Nobody should have to leave this region to receive outstanding care,” he said. “Every day we’re showing patients what’s possible right here in East Tennessee.”
Outside of Work
Outside the hospital, Dr. Carroll is a husband, father of three and outdoorsman who enjoys fishing and hunting.
Despite the complexity of his work, he describes himself simply. “Us Neurosurgeons, we’re just normal people,” he said with a smile.
His humility, years of experience and commitment to patient-centered care, is helping shape the future of neurosurgery at Parkwest Medical Center.
