For Elizabeth Dockery, DO, DABOM, family medicine is about more than treating symptoms. It’s about helping people feel seen, heard and supported through every stage of life. At Methodist Medical Center, she combines personal experience, medical expertise and a whole-person approach to help people improve their health and reach their goals.

That commitment inspired Dr. Dockery to launch the new Metabolic & OMT Clinic, bringing advanced, personalized care closer to home for patients across East Tennessee.

Inspired by a Physician’s Compassion

“My first experience with how a physician does so much more than just treat a disease was when my older brother was diagnosed with lymphoma,” Dr. Dockery says. “I saw how much he trusted his oncologist and how that physician eased his fears. That’s when I realized doctors treat the whole person, not just the illness.”

Her passion for helping others grew from her own childhood experiences. Raised for much of her early life by a single mother, Dr. Dockery understands the challenges many families face when trying to access healthcare.

“I was uninsured as a child and received care through the health department,” she says. “After deciding to become a physician, I knew I wanted to help underserved patients, just as people helped me.”

Building Lifelong Relationships Through Family Medicine

That desire to serve others led her to family medicine, a specialty she loves because it allows her to build lasting relationships with patients and families.

“I can see a two-week-old infant and then an 89-year-old patient right after,” she says. “I enjoy getting to know my patients and living life with them. They know about my family and I know about theirs.”

A Personal Passion for Metabolic Health

One area of care especially close to her heart is metabolic health and obesity management. Her passion comes from her own lifelong journey with weight management.

“I’ve struggled with obesity most of my life,” she says. “I know the challenges, frustrations and ups and downs that come with it. That’s why I wanted to help people who are experiencing the same things.”

She also wants patients to understand an important truth.

“It’s not just about willpower,” Dr. Dockery explains. “When someone has struggled with weight for a long time, their body can make it very difficult to lose more weight. Knowing that can be a breakthrough because patients realize it’s not all their fault. Then they can seek help and create a plan with their healthcare provider.”

Bringing Whole-Person Care to the Community

At the Methodist Family Metabolic & OMT Clinic, Dr. Dockery focuses on identifying the root cause of health concerns rather than simply treating symptoms. By combining metabolic health services with Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), she helps patients improve their overall well-being through a personalized approach.

“We help patients identify what’s really contributing to their health challenges and develop a treatment plan designed specifically for them,” she says. “We want them to be healthy from the inside out.”

Encouragement from Someone Who Understands

Above all, Dr. Dockery wants patients who feel discouraged to know they are not alone.

“I’ve been there too and I still struggle with things,” she says. “I’m not at my goal weight yet, so I’m right there in the boat with you. Weight management is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. We can help you achieve your goals and encourage you when you need it.”
