Congratulations to DAISY Award Recipient: Keith Tipton, RN

Congratulations to Keith Tipton a registered nurse with Methodist Medical Center who was honored recently with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days

The DAISY program at Methodist was launched in 2018 and it was an honor to recognize Critical Care registered nurse Keith Tipton as one of our newest award recipients.

Methodist’s Chief Nursing Officer, Shaun Clayton, delivered the award during a special Nurses’ Week event and members of the hospital’s leadership along with Keith’s team were on hand to congratulate him.

The Promise of Kindness, Compassion and Understanding

“Often, we receive nominations from patients and family members,” said Clayton. “But Keith’s nomination was submitted by a physician who witnessed an interaction so touching and life-altering for a particular patient that it inspired him to draft the following

“I am a provider with the Covenant Psychiatric Liaison Team. Day in and day out, I work with patients from vulnerable populations. Many of these individuals suffer from severe psychiatric illness. Others suffer from substance related disorders. Unfortunately, there is often a stigma surrounding the care of patients struggling with substance abuse and IV drug abuse disorders. I was working with a patient who refused to meet with my team multiple times because they were afraid to begin the process of drug rehabilitation. This patient’s critical care nurse, Keith Tipton, encouraged the patient and gently reminded her of her commitment– to herself and her family– to get better. In doing so, Mr. Tipton embodied the promise that Covenant Health strives to maintain. After talking with her nurse, the patient eventually met and talked with myself and my team. The patient is now receiving the psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care necessary to thrive and begin the process of recovery. Covenant Health is a healthcare system about inclusivity and equal opportunity. It warmed my heart to see our nursing staff not only taking care of our patients, but also treating every patient with kindness, care and warmth. That is what Covenant Health is all about.”

“Keith, the DAISY Award is a very distinct recognition, and as a fellow nurse, I am incredibly proud to bestow this honor upon you,” said Clayton. “With patience, compassion, and humanity you were able to help meet a patient where they were and to provide a type of healing that transcends even the most amazing clinical care delivered at the bedside.  Thank you for being a part of the Methodist Medical Center family and for making a difference in the lives of those around you.”
