CROSSVILLE, TENN. – May 2026 – Covenant Health’s Cumberland Medical Center has earned recognition from three of the nation’s most respected healthcare ratings organizations in 2026. In recent months, the hospital has been named a 2026 Forbes Top Hospital®, received a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and achieved its seventh consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group.
Together, these honors highlight Cumberland Medical Center’s sustained commitment to delivering safe, high‑quality care to the residents of the Cumberland Plateau and surrounding communities.

Seventh Consecutive “A” Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
Most recently, Cumberland Medical Center earned another “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Spring 2026. This marks the hospital’s seventh consecutive “A.” This achievement places Cumberland among an elite group of “Straight A” hospitals nationwide that have maintained top safety performance four over five grading cycles.
Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer of The Leapfrog Group, commended the hospital’s achievement. “Cumberland Medical Center deserves recognition for its unwavering focus on protecting patients and delivering safe care, earning an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade for seven consecutive cycles. Sustaining this level of excellence over time shows a true, organization‑wide commitment to making patient safety a top priority every single day.”
Nationally Recognized as a 2026 Forbes Top Hospital®
The Forbes Top Hospital® inaugural ranking highlights hospitals that excel across 56 quality measures grouped into four key categories: outcomes, best practices, value and patient experience. Cumberland was one of only a select number of hospitals in Tennessee to earn this distinction.
Cumberland was one of only a select number of hospitals in Tennessee to earn this distinction. The outcome category consisted of 25 clinical measures that were adjusted to account for social drivers of health, such as socioeconomics and access to medical services, for each hospital’s community and then compared to the national average. Those measures accounted for more than half the weight of the overall score. Data was collected from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services Provider Data Catalog.
CMS Awards Cumberland a Four‑Star Quality Rating
As part of their Hospital Compare program, CMS awards star ratings to hospitals annually. The rating evaluates hospitals on multiple measures, including patient experience, safety, readmissions and clinical outcomes.
A Year of Excellence
These three national recognitions reflect Cumberland Medical Center’s ongoing efforts to strengthen quality, enhance patient outcomes and maintain a culture of safety. As part of Covenant Health, the hospital continues to invest in clinical excellence, advanced technology and highly skilled caregivers.
“Each of these national recognitions tells a consistent story about who we are as a hospital,” said Jason Pilant, DHA, MBA, FACHE, chief administrative officer of Cumberland Medical Center. “Our physicians, nurses and staff work tirelessly to deliver safe, high‑quality, compassionate care, and these awards reflect the strength of their work across every area of our organization.
