Burns says it’s not just the technology and state-of-the-art facilities that make the breast center special. “It’s also the dedicated employees who are committed to providing excellent care to every patient, whether it’s a family member, a neighbor who lives down the street, or a visitor from a thousand miles away.”

LeConte Comprehensive Breast Center is staffed by radiologists, mammographers, sonographers and clerical assistants. Supervisor Candace Wedlock says the mammographers and sonographers have a combined total of more than 100 years of experience, with most of the staff being longtime local residents having grown up in Sevier County.

“Comfort in a friendly and familiar face makes such a difference in a tight-knit community,” Wedlock says. “We have some of the kindest patients here and being able to take care of them is a blessing.”

LeConte Medical Center is also designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Wedlock says the latest accreditation in stereotactic breast imaging is one more way to let patients know their care is in good hands.

“This helps to assure our patients and community that our breast center provides the highest level of image quality and safety,” says Wedlock. “An ACR approval solidifies that we meet all the requirements in equipment, medical personnel and quality assurance.”

LeConte Comprehensive Breast Center is a full-service breast health center with a complete, multi-disciplinary program offering a full spectrum of clinical and support services. In addition to stereotactic breast imaging, this includes breast ultrasound, MRI and biopsy, as well as mammography in 2D and 3D.

Among the support services offered is a certified patient navigator for each person who is diagnosed with breast cancer. The navigator is trained to help communicate with the care providers, keep the patient informed, and get answers to any questions the patient may have along the way.

In partnership with the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation, the LeConte Comprehensive Breast Center offers free mammograms for qualifying women who have a financial need in Sevier County.
