Amanda’s Nomination

“I had surgery in December. The entire experience was excellent. Everything ran as smoothly as possible and the staff were friendly and very responsive. Even with the great overall experience, Amanda stood out. I usually get nauseated with anesthesia. The staff and providers were aware and prepared. The nurse medicated me when I became nauseated and then gave me another medication when that didn’t help. This was when Amanda came to work with me. She spent several minutes talking with my husband and I about general things, like our kids. This bought the medicine some time to kick in. Amanda stayed at my bedside until I felt better and then got me up and walking.

The nausea hit again while I was up and Amanda got me a wheelchair so I could sit down and handed me an alcohol swab to sniff. Several staff asked her if she needed any help and she said no each time. She stayed with me and gave me the time I needed to feel better. I did not feel rushed or feel like she had another patient to get to. Once I felt better, she had me walk some stairs and then got me back into bed for the other exercises I needed to learn.

As a nurse, I know how busy everyone is in healthcare. I am sure Amanda had many patients to see, but I never felt that. She made me feel like I was the only patient that mattered in that moment. I also realize that when I got nauseated during my walk, she could have handed me off to the nurse and then come back to me later, which she didn’t do. I was very appreciative of that because I really wanted to go home and get settled. I really appreciate Amanda making me her priority and taking the one unavoidable negative part of the experience and making it a positive. It isn’t the grand gestures that always are the most important. This small act of kindness made me feel important I was really nervous about walking after my surgery and because of my interaction with Amanda, I felt more confident going home.”
