For more than 45 years, Covenant Health’s Mohammad Rahman, MD has devoted his life to caring for patients as an internal physician in Loudon, Tenn. As he prepares to retire, he is honored that his legacy will continue through his son, Ayaz Rahman, MD, interventional cardiologist and cardiovascular leader with Covenant Health.
A Calling Shaped by Generations
Dr. Mohammad Rahman’s journey into medicine began similarly to his son’s. Long before his career started, he watched his own father serve patients as a family practitioner. His father cared for patients with compassion and dignity.
“I was attracted to becoming a physician very early in life. I saw him day in and day out taking care of the patients and how the patients loved him,” Dr. Mohammad Rahman said. “That solidified my decision that I would become a physician by going to the USA for higher education with aspirations of becoming an expert in my field.”
After completing his training in internal medicine, he visited Loudon, Tenn. “After my visit, I knew in my heart that Loudon was the place that I would make and call home,” Dr. Mohammad Rahman said.

Building a Practice Rooted in Relationship
Dr. Mohammad Rahman began practicing at Internal Medicine Associates in Loudon in 1981. During that time, rural physicians carried broad responsibilities and deep connections to their communities. “In those days, I would see patients in the office, follow them in the hospital from admission through discharge, and back again in the office after,” he explained.
Because Loudon was a rural community, physicians worked together to meet every need. His days extended far beyond office visits, following patients through every stage of care.
“At that time, the Loudon hospital did not have many physicians,” Dr. Mohammad Rahman explained. “Each physician would take call as a hospitalist and work in the emergency room one day a week.”
Over decades, patients became familiar faces, families grew and relationships deepened with trust.
With medicine being so woven into everyday life, Dr. Mohammed Rahman’s son, Ayaz, was exposed to the hospital environment. “During those days working and taking call, my wife and children would come in the evening to bring me dinner and visit me,” Dr. Mohammad Rahman said.
Those early experiences became part of Dr. Ayaz Rahman’s childhood, shaping how he understood medicine.
Inspired by Example, Guided by Values
For Dr. Ayaz Rahman, watching his father care for patients left a lasting impression.
“Growing up, I watched the way he cared for patients with compassion, humility and dedication. Long before I understood the technical side of medicine, I understood the impact he had on people and the trust they placed in him,” he explained. “Those experiences shaped not only my decision to become a physician, but also the kind of physician I hoped to become.”
After completing advanced training, Dr. Ayaz Rahman came back to East Tennessee. He was excited to start his career with Covenant Health’s Cardiology Associates of East Tennessee.
“It has also been incredibly meaningful to return home and practice alongside my father at Covenant Health,” he said. “Being able to continue that legacy in the same community and organization is something I never take for granted.”
For Dr. Mohammad Rahman, seeing his son care for patients in the community they call home has been deeply fulfilling. “Things have come full circle,” he said.
Leading the Next Chapter of Cardiovascular Care
Today, Dr. Ayaz Rahman’s role continues to expand as he helps lead cardiovascular care across Covenant Health. He serves as executive medical director of cardiovascular services and as medical director of Covenant Health’s Structural Heart Program. These roles allow him to serve patients and shape the future of heart care in our community.
His vision reflects both innovation and compassion. “My vision for cardiac care at Covenant Health is to continue building a program centered on clinical excellence, innovation, collaboration and an exceptional patient experience,” he said.
Despite rapid advances in cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Ayaz Rahman believes the heart of care remains unchanged.
“I believe it is just as important to provide reassurance, communication and trust as it is to provide technical expertise,” he said. “In critical situations, patients often remember not only what you did clinically, but also how you made them feel during a very vulnerable moment.”
A Legacy That Endures
As Dr. Mohammad Rahman prepares to retire, the most difficult part is stepping away from the patients and families who have been part of his life for more than four decades. “I will most definitely miss them,” he shared. Still, he finds comfort in knowing they will continue to receive the same thoughtful, compassionate care.
For Dr. Ayaz Rahman, continuing that example is deeply meaningful. The dedication, humility and compassion he witnessed growing up remain at the center of how he practices today.
Covenant Health is a place where physicians don’t just build careers, they build roots. Just as generations of patients return for care, generations of physicians come home and reinvest in the same communities that invested in them.
