Back to School Emergency Essentials for Kids

As the school year kicks off, so does the annual wave of sniffles, sneezes, and stomach bugs. Classrooms, buses, and cafeterias become hotspots for germs, and it’s not long before illnesses start making their rounds from kids to family. While we can’t keep our kids in a bubble, we can help them stay healthy and ready to learn with a simple, personalized emergency kit.

At Covenant Health, we know prevention is the best medicine. That’s why we’re encouraging families to pack a small, health-focused emergency kit for their children to keep in their backpack or locker. These kits can help kids manage minor health issues on the go, reduce the spread of germs, and stay comfortable throughout the school day.

Emergency Kit Essentials

  • Basic First Aid Supplies: Cuts and scrapes are common on the playground. Keep kids prepared with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment packets, tweezers, and a small roll of medical tape.
  • Hand Sanitizer: From desks and door handles to playground equipment and basketballs, kids are touching the same things all day long. Encourage your kids to use their travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer before and after using shared supplies.
  • Tissues: Rather than sneezing into hands or wiping runny noses on sleeves, keep your kids equipped with a pocket-sized tissue pack.
  • Healthy Snacks: Keep your kids energized and ready to learn with non-perishable, allergy-safe snacks like granola bars or applesauce pouches.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated helps support the immune system. Choose a leak-proof, refillable bottle that fits easily in a backpack.
  • Feminine Hygiene Products: For older kids, include feminine supplies like pads or tampons in a discreet pouch. Add a spare pair of underwear and a resealable bag for extra peace of mind.
  • Lip Balm and Lotion: Dry air in the classroom can lead to chapped lips and hands. Pack unscented, hypoallergenic lip and hand creams to help.
  • Deodorant: Keep gym class odors at bay throughout the day with a pocket-sized deodorant
  • Electrolyte Drink Mix: Stock your kids with an extra boost of hydration for hot days. Too much fun on the playground or running in gym class could lead to dehydration.
  • Cold and Flu Items: In case sickness hits in the classroom, pack a few cough drops, stomach medicine, a face mask, and a cardigan to help your kid get through the school day.
  • Money: A small amount of cash just in case of emergencies can help kids out of a tough situation such as leaving their lunch on the bus or forgetting money for a field trip.

As you check off your back-to-school shopping list, take a few extra minutes to build a health-smart emergency kit. This small step toward a healthier year is a proactive way to ensure they stay focused on learning.
