Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Series, Barium Awallow or Esophagram
A group of X-rays that look at your esophagus, stomach and first part of your small intestine to diagnose anatomic abnormalities, such as a hiatal hernia, blockages, inflammation of the esophagus and free reflux. It is primarily used to rule out esophageal disorders like achalasia. A barium swallow involves ingesting a solution that can be seen on X-ray. A round tablet of barium may be given to allow observation of the movement of the esophagus during the act of swallowing.
