Types of Brain Tumors We Treat

Approximately 90,000 patients in the U.S. receive a primary brain tumor diagnosis each year, and more than 1 million Americans are currently living with a brain tumor. With more than 100 types of brain tumors, each diagnosis comes with a distinctive set of symptoms, treatment options and outcomes. Three prominent types of brain tumors are gliomas, meningiomas, and brain metastases. While 72% of brain tumors are non-malignant (benign), nearly one third (28%) are malignant (cancerous).

Benign (Non-Cancerous) Brain Tumors

Meningiomas originate from the meninges, which are the layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. They are typically slow-growing, benign, and account for over half of all non-malignant tumors.

Benign brain tumors also include craniopharyngiomas, pituitary adenomas, schwannomas, among others.

Malignant (Cancerous) Brain Tumors

Gliomas are the most common type of tumor of the brain and central nervous system. Gliomas are classified into four grades based on their aggressiveness and growth rate.

Glioma types include astrocytomas (the most common type), ependymomas, glioblastoma multiforme (the most invasive type) medulloblastomas and oligodendrogliomas.

Metastatic Brain Tumors

Metastatic brain tumors occur when cancer cells spread to the brain from another part of the body such as the lung, breast, colon, kidney or melanoma. When cancer cells from the primary tumor travel to the brain, they can form one or more secondary malignant tumors.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

If you’re experiencing new, persistent, or concerning symptoms, it’s important to talk with your doctor. They can assess your condition, review your medical history, and, if needed, refer you to a brain tumor specialist. Your doctor may also conduct a neurological exam and order further diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.  If you have a known brain tumor and would like a second opinion, please select the Request Second Opinion option.

CT Scan

During a CT scan, an X-ray beam moves in a circle around your head and captures two-dimensional images of your brain from multiple angles. A computer combines the X-rays into a cross-sectional image of your brain.

MRI

During an MRI, a tunnel-shaped scanner uses magnets and radio waves to generate two- or three-dimensional pictures of brain tissue. A contrast dye may be injected to help the tumor appear more clearly in the results.

Advanced Imaging

Additional tests such as molecular profiling and advanced neuroimaging can help specialists gain a better understanding of your tumor. If more information is needed, a tumor biopsy may be performed to establish an exact tumor diagnosis.

Pathology

Finally, a pathology report will summarize key information such as the location, type, grade, microscopic description and molecular markers of the tumor. With this information, your care team will recommend advanced treatment options to provide the best care outcomes.

Brain Tumor Treatment Options

Our brain tumor specialists utilize the latest surgical techniques, radiation therapy technology and medical therapy treatments to remove brain tumors while sparing surrounding healthy brain tissue.

Surgery

Our surgical teams use the latest techniques and state-of-the-art technology to remove brain tumors with utmost precision. With advanced imaging and neuronavigation systems, our neurosurgeons can differentiate between healthy brain tissue and tumor cells for the safest and most effective removal possible.

Medical Therapy for Malignant Tumors

For patients with malignant brain tumors, chemotherapy and immunotherapy are critical tools in the treatment of brain tumors. Advances in these therapies continue to improve outcomes for patients. Treatment options have distinct mechanisms, administration methods and side-effect profiles.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery

Gamma Knife radiosurgery offers a non-invasive treatment option that’s precise and effective. This advanced technology delivers highly focused beams of radiation to target and destroy tumor cells without making incisions. Ideal for small to medium-sized tumors, Gamma Knife treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return to your daily activities quickly.

Proton Therapy

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses proton particles to precisely target brain tumors and reduce radiation exposure to healthy brain tissue. Covenant Health has the region’s only proton therapy treatment center. Our program offers therapy with fewer side effects, allowing you to continue your daily activities throughout treatment.

What is a brain tumor?

A brain tumor occurs when abnormal cells form in the brain or a part of the central nervous system (CNS) such as the spine or cranial nerves.

Can a brain tumor be cured?

Brain tumors can be treated through a variety of advanced options ranging from surgical and radiation procedures to innovative medical therapies. Treatment varies depending on the grade, size and location of the tumor.

How is a brain tumor different from brain cancer?

Brain cancer is the result of cancerous cell growth in your brain. All brain cancers are tumors, but not all brain tumors are cancerous. Non-malignant, or benign, brain tumors are typically slow-growing and rarely spread.

How is a brain tumor diagnosed?

Your physician will review your symptoms and medical history, conduct a neurological exam, and order diagnostic testing such as a CT scan or MRI to confirm a new or suspected brain tumor diagnosis. If more information is needed, specialists may conduct advanced imaging studies or perform a biopsy of the tumor.

What is brain tumor grading?

Tumors are classified between grades 1 and 4 based on how aggressive they are, as well as how responsive they are to treatment. Grade 1 tumors are typically the least aggressive, while Grade 4 tumors are malignant (cancerous) and the most aggressive.

How is a brain tumor treated?

Treatment for brain cancer focuses on removing the tumor and then destroying any remaining cells. Brain tumor specialists use a range of treatment options from surgery and radiation to therapies such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

How much does brain tumor treatment cost?

Health insurance policies commonly cover diagnostic tests, hospital stays, outpatient rehabilitation and other expenses related to brain cancer treatment. If you are uninsured or concerned about your ability to pay, please call our financial department at 865-374-3000.
