Diagnostic Imaging – X-Ray

Methodist Medical Center offers comprehensive imaging services, including several x-ray technologies. All Radiologic Technologists at Methodist Medical Center are American Registry of Radiologic Technologists® registered.

X-rays are a type of radiation called electromagnetic waves. X-ray imaging creates pictures of the inside of your body. In the hospital setting, x-rays are emitted by a machine as individual particles that pass through the body and then get detected. Radiation protection and minimizing patient exposure is always practice for patient safety using ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).

Fluoroscopy is a technique for obtaining “live” x-ray images of a patient. A dye that shows up on x-rays can be injected or swallowed to outline blood vessels or organs as it moves through the body. This outlines blood vessels or organs as it moves through the body. This process allows the physician to see images from inside the body on a TV monitor. Fluoroscopy is often used to see the digestive tract. It also can help doctors locate a foreign object in the body, position a catheter or needle for a procedure, or set a broken bone.

How to Prepare For Your Exam

  • Please wear comfortable clothing with minimal jewelry and metal.
  • Some exams may require removal of earrings, necklaces, hair pins, dentures, partials, etc. to ensure quality images.
  • Always inform the Technologist if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
  • Please bring a current written list of medications.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to register.
  • Some exams will require patients to be NPO (without food/drink) in order for the exam to be completed.
  • If you are diabetic, please contact your ordering provider to determine the safest way to prepare for your exam.
  • Some exams may require the patient to drink barium and will be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids post procedure.

Upon arrival, you are registered and escorted to the x-ray department where you will be asked about your medical history. A technologist will explain the procedure prior to the exam and help answer questions.

Please call (865) 835-4600 if you have questions regarding your exam preparation. If your physician requests copies of your exam, a CD will be provided prior to your discharge. If you have scheduling concerns, please call (865) 374-4000
