At Knoxville Infectious Disease Consultants, our physicians use their expertise in medicine, pharmacology and epidemiology to diagnose and treat individual patients with acute or chronic illnesses or infections caused by:
- prions (abnormal and transmissable pathogenic agents that cause disease)
Examples of commonly known infectious diseases include influenza, measles, hepatitis or malaria, to name just a few.
KIDC offers clinical services and laboratory tests that help our experienced specialists diagnose a variety of infectious diseases and conditions, and develop comprehensive treatment plans for our patients.
If you are referred to one of our infectious disease specialists, you can expect them to conduct a physical exam and discuss your medical history. They’ll ask you questions about your symptoms, medications, and your environment.
You will likely need testing to help diagnose your condition and determine the appropriate treatment. You may need:
- Blood tests
- Imaging tests such as X-Ray, MRI, or CT scans
- Spinal tap (lumbar puncture)
- Stool sample tests
- Throat swabs
- Tissue biopsies
- Urine tests
- IV Services (Infusion Center) for specific conditions (subject to insurance approval)

Insurers often require a physician referral prior to your visit to Knoxville Infectious Disease Consultants. As a courtesy to our patients, we will attempt to contact your primary care physician and request a referral. However, it is your responsibility to confirm that a referral has been obtained before you are seen by our providers.
If a test or procedure is ordered by a Knoxville Infectious Disease Consultants provider, our staff will obtain a necessary precertification on your behalf. Precertification for any tests or procedures ordered by your own primary care physician is the responsibility of your primary care provider’s office.
