In February 2021, the hospital completed construction on our two brand new critical care floors, located on the fourth and fifth floors of the Center for Advanced Medicine. Our state of the art critical care department was designed with our patients and their loved ones at the forefront of our minds.
Our Critical Care facilities feature ample space for families to remain with their loved one and take part in their care. Our department’s rooms feature modern advancements, including in-room dialysis connections, telehealth ICU capabilities, and lifting equipment to safely mobilize and move our patients.
Our critical care units offer a calm, quiet healing environment for our patients receiving critical care as well as for their loved ones.

Neuro Intensive Care Unit – NICU
Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is well-equipped to care for patients suffering from neurological events, including strokes.
Our Knoxville area hospital is recognized by the Joint Commission, the American Heart Association, and the American Stroke Association as a Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Our 23-bed Neuro unit also provides care for patients with aneurysms, craniotomies, some spinal surgeries, and other neurological issues.
Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit – MSICU
The Medical-Surgical ICU is a 25-bed unit designed to provide critical care for patients immediately after difficult surgeries, patients with pneumonia and gastrointestinal bleeding, and patients on long-term ventilators.
Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit – CVICU
Our 24-bed Cardiovascular ICU unit provides critical care for patients who have just had open-heart surgery, are recovering from open-heart surgery, or have had interventional cardiology procedures.
Each of the three ICUs at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center also includes step-down rooms for patients who need closer observation before being transferred to a medical floor or being discharged from the hospital.

Tele-Intensive Care Services – Tele-ICU
Tele-ICU services represent a new advancement in medical care.
Fort Sanders Regional and other Covenant Health hospitals are the first in East Tennessee to provide this service as an extra layer of care options for our critically ill patients.
Covenant Health tele-ICU medical providers are intensivists (doctors with special training in critical care). These hand-selected, highly-trained specialists use telehealth technology to partner with our bedside clinical care teams.

Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is a proud member of Covenant Health, our region’s top-performing healthcare network. The Fort Sanders Regional Critical Care department is located in the Center for Advanced Medicine on floors four and five of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
To visit our department, use the main entrance to the Center for Advanced Medicine off of Clinch Avenue Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours and on weekends, please enter through the Emergency entrance off of Laurel Avenue (across from the Laurel Avenue Garage).
