Our GI Department offers two suites devoted exclusively to gastrointestinal patients, and a private family waiting area.
Endoscopies
A gastrointestinal endoscopy involves inserting a flexible lighted tube called an endoscope down the throat to view inside the body’s digestive tract. The endoscope has a camera that allows the doctor to capture pictures and view the image on a screen. While the endoscope is inside the body, doctors can take samples, or biopsies, of any abnormal-looking tissues.
Additional Services
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is an examination of the lining of the esophagus, stomach and upper duodenum. The examination is performed with a flexible scope which is inserted down the throat while the patient is given monitored sedation. Doctors check for inflammation, strictures (abnormal narrowing), erosion, tumors, ulcers or any other abnormalities. The scope allows them to perform biopsies, remove polyps, perform dilatation (a procedure to widen an area), and control bleeding.
Colonoscopy is a procedure to view the colon and rectum with a flexible scope while the patient is under monitored sedation. Fort Loudoun Medical Center performs routine screening conoloscopies and can diagnose certain conditions such as polyps, cancer, colitis and Crohn’s disease.
