Understanding Shingles

Shingles can start quietly—but it can quickly turn painful. The good news? You can act fast. Early care can ease symptoms and help you heal sooner. At Covenant Health, our experts are here to guide you every step of the way.

What Is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection. It is also called herpes zoster. It comes from the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus stays in your body. It hides in your nerves. Years later, it can wake up again.

“Shingles develops when the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox, becomes active again later in life.”

This can happen to anyone who has had chickenpox. But the risk rises with age. Adults over 50 are more likely to get shingles.

A person sitting at a desk holds their lower back in pain, with a highlighted area indicating discomfort or injury—possibly experiencing discomfort after a recent colonoscopy.
Shingles can cause a painful rash that usually appears on one side of the body or face.

What Causes Shingles?

The virus can reactivate when your body is under stress. It also happens more often when your immune system is weaker.

Common triggers include:

  • Aging
  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Certain medicines that lower immune defenses

Some treatments, like cancer therapy, can also increase risk.

Shingles Symptoms

Shingles often starts before you see a rash. Many people feel pain, tingling, or burning in one spot.

“The most recognizable symptom of shingles is a painful rash that usually appears on one side of the body or face.”

Other symptoms may include:

  • Blisters on the skin
  • Fever and chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Skin that feels very sensitive

The rash usually forms blisters. These blisters often dry and crust over in 7 to 10 days. Pain can last longer if not treated early.

Why Early Care Matters

Timing is important. Treatment works best when it starts within 72 hours of the first symptoms.

“Early treatment for shingles can reduce pain and speed recovery.”

Doctors may prescribe antiviral medicine. This helps slow the virus. It can reduce how severe the outbreak becomes. It can also lower the risk of lasting nerve pain.

Singles Prevention

You can take steps to lower your risk. The shingles vaccine is a safe and proven option.

“Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent shingles.”

It is recommended for adults age 50 and older. The vaccine can help prevent shingles or make symptoms much milder if it occurs. Our Covenant Health providers can help you decide if the vaccine is right for you.
