Cumberland Medical Center Introduces Innovative AI Technology for Treating Enlarged Prostates

Robotic-Assisted Technology Provides Effective Symptom Relief
CROSSVILLE, TENN. – April 2025 – Cumberland Medical Center is the first in East Tennessee to introduce new robotic technology powered by artificial intelligence to treat enlarged prostates. The HYDROS™ Robotic System offers Aquablation® therapy, a minimally invasive and effective solution to provide symptom relief for patients with enlarged prostates.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, more commonly known as an enlarged prostate, affects over 40 million males in the United States. It’s caused by hormone imbalance that stimulates the growth of prostate tissue, most often in men 50 years or older. Enlarged prostates impact urinary function, often causing frequent urination (including getting up at night to urinate), a weak stream, urgency and feeling like the bladder can’t empty fully.
The robotic system is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional prostate surgery. It’s designed to improve efficiency, enhance the patient and surgeon experience, and deliver a more accurate and consistent treatment plan. Most patients have a quicker recovery, fewer side effects post-procedure and require less future retreatment.
Technology Facilitates Customized Treatment Plans

The therapy uses real-time, ultrasound-guided, robotic-assisted waterjet technology. The technology allows surgeons to create customized treatment plans by precisely targeting the prostate tissue to be removed, allowing more healthy tissue to be preserved.
“The benefit of the technology is that patients suffer from less pain with the operation. Compared to traditional techniques, they have a faster recovery with fewer side effects such as burning after the procedure,” said William Young, MD, a urologist at Cumberland Specialty Group. “Hospital stays are typically shorter – just one night – and you can resume normal activity within two weeks.”
Ultrasound imaging provides the surgeon with a multi-dimensional detailed view of the prostate that shows the patient’s anatomy. The surgeon uses a robotic-assisted, heat-free waterjet to more accurately remove obstructive tissue and safeguard critical anatomy. Following treatment, patients experience improved urinary flow, symptom relief and preserved sexual function.
The new advancement in urology is the first surgical robot technology available at Cumberland.
“Cumberland Medical Center is proud to introduce the latest innovative technology available for treating enlarged prostates,” said Randy Davis, president and chief administrative officer. “It marks the first investment in robotic systems for our hospital and is the first Aquablation technology in the Covenant Health network. This will be a great benefit to our community. We look forward to continuing investing in robotics to provide the best care and experience for our patients.”
