Saving Limbs, Restoring Lives: The Power of Limb Salvage

Limb Salvage Program offers patients hope, independence, and improved quality of life by preventing amputation and preserving limb function. At Covenant Health Parkwest, our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to early intervention and comprehensive care.

What is a Limb Salvage Program?

For patients facing severe limb-threatening conditions—such as peripheral artery disease, chronic wounds, or infections—amputation has historically been the default treatment. However, modern medicine offers a transformative alternative: limb salvage.

These programs focus on preserving the limb function and appearance by treating the underlying causes of damage, whether vascular disease, diabetes-related complications, or trauma. When warranted, limb salvage surgery is an attempt to save a limb when amputation would otherwise be necessary.

Vascular surgeon Maksim Gusev, MD, explains “Our goal is not just to save the limb but to restore blood flow and function. Limb salvage gives patients the chance to walk, work, and live independently again.”

According to the Journal of Vascular Surgery, research also shows that major amputation carries a consistently high five-year mortality rate, along with significant socioeconomic burdens.

By contrast, limb salvage programs:

  • Prevent amputation through early detection and intervention
  • Improve quality of life by allowing patients to maintain mobility and independence
  • Reduce healthcare costs by avoiding long-term rehabilitation and prosthetic needs
  • Support emotional well-being, as patients retain their natural limb and confidence

The Limb Salvage Program at Covenant Health Parkwest brings together vascular surgeons, wound care specialists, podiatrists, and hyperbaric medicine experts to provide coordinated care. The program emphasizes timely scheduling, comprehensive evaluation, and individualized treatment plans.

Lindsey Harrell, MD, hyperbaric and wound care specialist, explains, “Early intervention is critical. By treating wounds aggressively by coordination with other specialists, local wound care, and the addition of an accredited hyperbaric oxygen program, we can heal the wound and stop the progression before amputation becomes the only option.”

Who Can Benefit?

Ideal candidates for limb salvage include patients with:

  • Chronic limb-threatening ischemia
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Non-healing diabetic wounds
  • Resting pain or tissue loss

Parkwest’s Limb Salvage program develops individualized treatment plans for patients, including possible surgical intervention, to help revascularize their extremities, instead of having an amputation due to lack of blood flow. By acting early, patients can avoid the devastating consequences of amputation and instead regain strength, mobility, and confidence.
