How to Create a Sleep-Friendly Bedroom

A good night’s sleep isn’t a luxury, it’s essential for your health. Poor sleep can affect your mood, energy, and even your heart. At Covenant Health, we know that better sleep starts with the right environment. Here are some easy tips to help you make your bedroom a sleep-friendly space.

A woman lies in bed under a blanket, smiling and stretching her arms as she wakes up.
  1. Eliminate Light

Light signals your brain to stay awake. Your bedroom should be as dark as possible. Use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block outside light. Try your best to turn off screens at least 30 minutes before bed. Your body needs that time to wind down.

  1. Reset the Thermostat

Temperature matters. A cooler environment helps your body relax. Most people sleep best in a cool room, around 65 to 68 degrees. If you can, adjust your thermostat or use a fan.

  1. Selecting the Right Bedding

Comfort is key, so choose a bedding that feels good to you. Fabrics such as cotton, linen or bamboo offer both comfort and breathability to regulate your body temperature.

  1. Minimize Noise

Noise can keep your brain alert even when your eyes are closed. If you live in a noisy area with loud traffic or neighbors, try a white noise machine or a fan. White noise can mimic everything from waves in the ocean to a crackling bonfire. These soft sounds can trick your brain into relaxing.

  1. Keep Your Bedroom Tidy

Clutter creates stress. A clean, organized room signals your brain that it’s time to rest. Remove work materials and anything that reminds you of tasks that need to be done. Your bedroom should be for sleep, not for stress.

  1. Create a Bedtime Routine

When you keep your brain and body busy until the very last minute of the day, your body isn’t ready for sleep. It’s important to gradually wind down so sleep does not come as such a shock to the system. It should feel like the natural next step.
