When Craig Clark began feeling unwell after a school board meeting in Crossville, he had no idea he was moments away from a life-threatening cardiac event. Thanks to a rapid EMS response, real-time data transmission, and advanced cardiac technology, Cumberland Medical Center was in action before Craig even left his driveway.

Craig shares, “The cardiologist was already receiving my heart data in real time at the hospital. He was calling in his team and preparing the operating room while I was still in my driveway.”

Technology and Teamwork in Action

This seamless coordination was made possible by a newly approved cardiac monitor and defibrillator. Prior to introducing this cutting-edge equipment, Craig’s heart attack would not have been easily detected. The technology allowed the cardiac team to prepare and mobilize before Craig even arrived at the hospital.

From the moment Craig’s wife, Linda, called 911 to the time Craig left home in the ambulance, only 23 minutes had passed. That speed, combined with advanced technology and Covenant Health’s highly trained care team, led to a life-saving outcome.

At Cumberland Medical Center, Craig was swiftly moved from the emergency department to the catheterization (cath) lab. “It felt like a NASCAR pit stop,” he remembers. “Everyone had a role, and they moved with precision and confidence.”

Surgeons placed five stents to open blocked arteries. Incredibly, Craig suffered no damage to his heart muscle.

“Every minute counts in cases like mine,” he says. “It took state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated professionals at every stage of my care to bring me through. I’m here as evidence of what’s possible when the right people and the right tools come together with the grace of God.”

Compassionate Care Every Step of the Way

Throughout the experience, Craig says his wife was kept informed and reassured. “Their genuine confidence set her worries aside,” he recalls. “Every person we encountered, from EMS to the operating team, showed professionalism, compassion, and kindness.”

Now in cardiac rehab, Craig is on the road to recovery and grateful for the care he received.

The Impact of Innovation in Care

Randy Davis, president and chief administrative officer of Cumberland Medical Center, says Craig’s story reflects the importance of innovation and compassionate care.

“Craig’s story is incredible, and it is just one of the many lives saved with this technology.” Davis says, “At Cumberland Medical Center, we are investing in our community and bringing resources of larger systems to our hospital. We are giving our neighbors, friends, and family the very best chance of survival in a life-threatening emergency.”

Craig’s experience is a testament to Covenant Health’s commitment to expanding the capabilities of localized care in rural areas. In Crossville and the surrounding region, residents can trust that life-saving technology and expert care are close to home with Cumberland Medical Center.

As Craig continues his recovery, he encourages others to take their health seriously and not ignore warning signs. His story is proof that quick action, advanced technology, and compassionate care truly save lives.

Recognizing Heart Attack Symptoms

Every minute matters during a heart attack. Quick action, like Linda’s call to 911, can mean the difference between life and death.

Common warning signs include:

  • Chest pain, pressure, or tightness
  • Pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweats, nausea, or lightheadedness

How to Respond

Call 911 immediately. Don’t try to drive yourself to the hospital. EMS can begin life-saving care on the way and transmit critical information directly to the hospital team. Emergency medical services can begin working before you arrive.

Fast response, paired with the advanced technology and expertise at Covenant Health, can help ensure positive outcomes.
