When heart symptoms don’t come with clear answers, advanced imaging can play a critical role in diagnosis and care. At Covenant Health, cardiologist A. Kassem Abdallah, MD, uses specialized cardiac imaging to identify complex heart conditions and guide treatment plans.

Dr. Abdallah has specialized training in cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. These advanced tools can uncover the cause of heart problems, while minimizing the need for invasive procedures. He is Covenant Health’s first cardiologist to offer this level of heart imaging and one of only a few physicians in Knoxville with this expertise.

“Sometimes patients come in frustrated because they don’t have answers,” Dr. Abdallah says. “With these advanced services, we can explain what’s going on and guide them to the right treatment. You can see the relief in their eyes.”

Dr. Abdallah’s Journey to Cardiology

Originally from Egypt, Dr. Abdallah earned his medical degree from Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida, followed by a cardiology fellowship at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. He later completed an advanced cardiac imaging fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, before returning to Tennessee to practice.

He likes that cardiology brings multiple aspects of medicine together. “I work in the clinic and the hospital, perform procedures and imaging and often see patients improve relatively quickly. That part is very rewarding,” he says.

Dr. Abdallah is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiology and nuclear cardiology, with an additional certification in advanced heart imaging. He remains at the forefront of medical innovation. He actively participates in national medical societies and collaborates closely with colleagues.

Commitment to Innovation and Advancement

Cardiac MRI and cardiac CT allow physicians to closely examine the heart’s structure and function. These tools can help explain heart failure, evaluate heart muscle health, assess valves and detect heart disease, often without surgery.

Covenant Health has invested in advanced imaging technology and continues to strengthen heart imaging services across the region.

“Covenant Health has some of the best cardiac imaging equipment,” Dr. Abdallah says. “My vision aligned with Covenant Health’s commitment to building a strong, advanced cardiac imaging program.”

Treating Patients Like Family

Dr. Abdallah believes great care starts with trust. “I treat patients the same way I want my family to be treated,” he explains. “I share options and make decisions with them, not for them.”

He also credits the Covenant Health care teams for creating a seamless patient experience. “Our team gathers outside records quickly, saving patients time, stress and repeat testing. Collaboration across specialties allows patients to stay close to home while receiving expert care,” he shares.

Beyond the Clinic

Outside of work, Dr. Abdallah enjoys tennis, pickleball, swimming and spending time with his family. He and his wife are expecting their first child later this year, a baby girl.

One fun fact patients may not expect: “I’m from Egypt, and I’ve only visited the pyramids once,” he says.
