For Cynthia Miller, APN, Covenant Health’s Fort Sanders Perinatal Center isn’t just where she works. It’s where she became a mom and a grandma.

As a women’s health nurse practitioner caring for high‑risk pregnancies, she supports families through some of their most meaningful and vulnerable moments. But long before she joined the team, she experienced those moments herself as a patient.

Cynthia’s Trusted Healthcare Partner

Prior to starting her family and career, Cynthia’s mother and sister worked as RNs at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. She grew up seeing the care they delivered to patients, and she knew she wanted to deliver her own babies there too.

She felt safer working with trusted care teams, and she appreciated the convenience of the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital NICU. She knew she was covered no matter what happened during her pregnancies. “It gave me a sense of peace knowing I was in a place prepared for whatever situation developed,” she said.

Cynthia had positive experiences carrying and delivering both of her children with Fort Sanders Regional. “I had really great care during labor and postpartum with both of my pregnancies,” she said. “I can’t think of a thing I would change.”

Her labor experiences with her two children were very different. With one, she was induced and with the other, she went into spontaneous labor. She describes both as, “magical.”

Coming Home as a Provider

After having her children, Cynthia felt called to women’s health. She returned to  school to earn her master’s degree as a women’s health nurse practitioner. Today, she is a trusted member of the perinatal center team, known for her calm presence and ability to connect with families.

“When your child is the one experiencing a medical issue, you worry more and advocate more than you would for yourself,” she said. “I hope I can convey clinical knowledge with a mother’s reassurance.”

It’s especially meaningful for Cynthia to now provide the same care she once experienced as a patient.

“We have the very best women’s health care for every woman at every stage of life,” she said. “The combination of expertise under one roof is something you can’t find anywhere else.”

Caring for the Next Generation of Her Family

Cynthia has experienced several full- circle moments in her career.

When her son, Riley, and daughter-in-law, Sydney, announced they were expecting, Sydney chose Fort Sanders Perinatal Center for her own pregnancy care. Cynthia was excited to support Sydney through pregnancy and welcome her first grandbaby in 2022.

Watching her son become a father has been incredibly meaningful. “He is the kind of dad every child deserves,” she said. “Seeing him and my daughter‑in‑law grow into loving, protective parents has been surreal.”

Last year, Cynthia also helped her niece, Kenzie, welcome her baby. She remembers being there when Kenzie was born at Fort Sanders Regional in 1999. It was an amazing experience to support her as she became a mom.

“Either of them could have gone anywhere, but they chose the perinatal center,” she said. “It meant the world to me that they had that level of trust.”

A Mother’s Day Message

Her advice to new and expectant mothers is simple and heartfelt: “Enjoy each stage of your child’s life. They are all special and unique. My advice is to enjoy the ‘now’ with your family.”
