Covenant Health Morristown-Hamblen Now Offers Robotic-Assisted Surgeries

Covenant Health Morristown-Hamblen now offers robotic-assisted surgeries using state-of-the-art technology in general, urologic and gynecological surgeries. Robotic-assisted surgeries often provide a better patient experience with quicker recovery times, less pain, smaller incisions and overall better outcomes.

The da Vinci Xi is a robotic-assisted system used in minimally invasive surgeries. Specially trained surgeons are always in control of the system, which replicates the surgeon’s hand movements in real time with precision and range of motion. The system displays high-resolution, 3D images on a computer screen to better guide the surgeon, enabling smaller, precise incisions.

“Surgeries that often require two physicians or multiple assistants may now require only the surgeon and a surgical technologist. The system effectively ‘expands’ the surgeon to four hands,” explained Justin Bigalke, director of surgical services.

The technology currently is being used in general, urologic and gynecological procedures. Bigalke notes the system could eventually expand the types of robotic-assisted surgeries offered in the future.
