August 22, 2025 – Cumberland Medical Center is proud to hold the Upper Cumberland region’s only “Gold” certification as a Cribs for Kids® National Safe Sleep Hospital. This certification recognizes CMC’s commitment to best infant safe-sleep practices, ensuring the highest standards of care for our youngest patients. It also recognizes Cumberland Medical Center’s adherence to rigorous guidelines for Cribs for Kids® National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program.

“Our team has worked diligently to meet the requirements to earn this certification. It underscores our dedication to providing safe sleep care for our babies. We’re committed to ensuring that every newborn and infant at Cumberland Medical Center receives the highest level of care. This includes safe-sleep practices that align with the guidelines of Cribs for Kids,” said Randy Davis, president and CAO.
About Cribs for Kids’ Infant Safe-Sleep Initiative
Cribs for Kids is a national safe-sleep initiative dedicated to reducing infant mortality. “Sleep related deaths are the number one reason we lose our babies each year—3,400 infants annually,” said Michael H. Goodstein, MD, neonatologist and medical director at Cribs for Kids. “We know parents do at home what they see done in the hospital. So modeling safe sleep and providing education to families will have an impact on infant mortality. Cribs for Kids recognizes hospitals making this commitment.”
The certification is particularly significant because sleep-related deaths have accounted for nearly 24 percent (1 in 4) of all infant deaths in Tennessee during the past five years.
Judy Bannon, CEO and founder of Cribs for Kids, explains, “The National Infant Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program is rooted in safe-sleep recommendations made by American Academy of Pediatrics.” She adds that with 500+ infant safe sleep-certified hospitals across the country and beyond, “we’re proud to welcome Cumberland Medical Center to our program. It will have a profound effect on saving babies’ lives.”
