Tomosynthesis

What is tomosynthesis 3D mammography?

Compared to traditional mammography which uses “flat” imagery, tomosynthesis 3D digital mammography creates a three-dimensional visual of the breast. This imaging process allows the radiologist to see around and between breast tissue – including dense breast tissue – to better detect smaller cancers.

Is tomosynthesis 3D mammography as safe as traditional mammography?

Yes. The dosing of 3D mammography is equivalent to that of traditional mammography while providing a higher level of quality imaging.

Can tomosynthesis 3D mammography be used for women with dense breast tissue?

Absolutely. Women with dense breasts are four to six times more likely to develop breast cancer; however, cancer detection can be more challenging for women with dense breasts – especially with limitations of traditional mammography. With tomosynthesis 3D mammography, patients of all breast types can receive clearer, more defined images which may help detect cancer earlier than with traditional mammography.

How do I prepare for a tomosynthesis 3D mammogram?

As with a traditional mammogram, patients are asked not to wear deodorant or jewelry during a tomosynthesis 3D exam. The positioning of the breast during a tomosynthesis 3D mammogram is the same as a traditional mammogram; the only difference relates to the quality of the finished images.

Is tomosynthesis 3D mammography covered by insurance?

Currently, 3D mammography is covered by Medicare and many other insurances. To ensure coverage, you should check with your insurance provider. If insurance coverage is not available, the upfront cost is $80 and split as two separate fees: $35 from the breast center and $45 from radiology.
