Lymphedema: What It Is and How to Manage It

Lymphedema often begins with small symptoms. It often appears as swelling, a heavy feeling or tightness in an arm or leg. But without early care, it can grow into a daily struggle. The good news is lymphedema can be managed, and Covenant Health offers skilled, local experts who are ready to help.
“Lymphedema doesn’t define who you are or how you live. We can help you stay in control and ahead of your swelling,” says Dawn Williams, ATC, DPT, CLT‑LANA, at Covenant Health Therapy Center – Morristown.
What Causes Lymphedema
Lymphedema occurs when the body’s natural drainage system slows and fluid builds up. This can make movement harder and raise the risk of skin problems and infection. Swelling can affect one arm, one leg or other areas of the body. It may appear after surgery, radiation, injury or cancer treatment, and sometimes shows up months or years later.
Common signs include:
- Swelling in an arm, leg, hand or foot
- A heavy or tight feeling
- Skin that changes in texture
“The earlier we begin treatment, the more control patients have over their swelling and daily comfort,” Williams explains.
Lymphedema After Breast Cancer Treatment
People treated for breast cancer face a higher chance of developing lymphedema. This risk increases when more lymph nodes are removed or treated with radiation because the body has fewer pathways to move fluid. When lymph fluid can’t move well, it backs up and swelling begins.
Lymphedema can affect strength, motion and daily comfort. It may also raise the risk of skin breakdown and infections if not treated early.
How Covenant Health Treats Lymphedema
Managing lymphedema is not a one-time event. The Covenant Health team supports each patient through every phase of recovery.
Our therapy centers use Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), a gentle and effective approach that includes:
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage to help fluid move
- Compression Therapy using bandages or garments
- Gentle Exercise to improve movement and strength
- Skin Care to reduce infection risk
These steps work together to reduce swelling and improve comfort.
Many patients experience relief early and even more see big changes in comfort and mobility over time.
“Our goal is to give patients the tools they need to feel strong and capable every day,” Williams says. “We celebrate every win, big or small.”
