When certified nurse midwife, Lindy Kirk, APRN, CNM walked into exam rooms at 37 weeks pregnant, her patients instantly felt a connection. She was guiding women through one of the most intense seasons of their lives while navigating her own. “We’d walk in and immediately bond over how we were feeling,” she said. “It made the experience more real and more shared.”

At Covenant Health’s Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists, Lindy uses her personal journey to deepen care, strengthen empathy and support women with a perspective few providers get to experience.

Finding Her Calling

Lindy didn’t plan to become a midwife. She began her career as a labor and delivery nurse after earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Tennessee. “I wanted to be an ICU nurse,” she said. “But I found a job in labor and delivery and fell in love.”

After nearly a decade at the bedside, a friend encouraged her to take the next step. She returned to school at Frontier Nursing University and became a certified nurse midwife. “I decided this is the thing for me, and I will never do anything else,” she said. “I absolutely love doing this.”

Her passion is rooted in empowerment. “Having a baby is one of the hardest things many people will ever do,” she said. “Helping guide them through that is a gift.”

Care That Centers Safety and Respect

Lindy’s approach to care is grounded in compassion and honesty. She supports low‑intervention births when possible, but her priority is always the well‑being of her patients. “My main focus is keeping my patients safe while giving them the birth they desire as much as possible.”

She also speaks openly about disparities in maternal health, especially for Black women. “I tell them I’m aware of the higher risks,” she said. “I’m going to do everything in my power to hear them, see them and keep them safe.” Patients have thanked her for naming those concerns directly.

As part of Covenant Health, Lindy works closely with a team of midwives and physicians who share the same commitment to safe, respectful care. Midwives provide most prenatal visits and vaginal deliveries, while physicians step in for surgical needs. “We work together for every patient,” she said. “You’re supported by the whole team.”

Connecting Through Her Pregnancy

Being pregnant with her second child while caring for pregnant patients gave Lindy a new level of understanding. “In my second pregnancy, I’m feeling everything sooner and more intensely this time,” she said. “It has helped me relate to what my patients describe.”

She also carried her own hopes and worries. After a previous caesarean section, she wanted the chance to try for a vaginal birth. “I have to practice what I teach — letting go of control,” she said. “Ultimately, I just want her to come out safely.”

Her patients often asked how she was feeling, and many found comfort in knowing their provider was experiencing the same aches, fears and excitement. “It made the connection stronger,” she said.

A Birth Story That Came Full Circle

After months of caring for others while preparing for her own delivery, Lindy welcomed her healthy baby girl on February 18, 2026. Her daughter was born safely through vaginal delivery after her previous C-section (VBAC).

Her care team was the same Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists she works alongside every day, and their support meant everything to her. “What’s been nice is my providers in my practice, my midwives and my doctors, have been very supportive of my desire for VBAC and finding a way to do so safely.” They guided her through each step with the same compassion and teamwork she offers her own patients.
