Mark McClung found bladder relief for his enlarged prostate through Aquablation therapy at Covenant Health’s Cumberland Medical Center. After months of sleepless nights and constant interruptions, he was able to return to the life he loves without planning every moment around the nearest restroom.

Challenges of Living with an Enlarged Prostate

McClung is a 58-year-old Grandview resident. He enjoys fishing, hunting and spending time with his family. But as symptoms of an enlarged prostate worsened, his daily routine became increasingly difficult.

“I was getting up five, six, seven times a night,” McClung said. “I was only sleeping in 40- to 45-minute increments.”

The disruption carried into his workday, meetings and even trips to visit family.

“You start planning everything around where you’re going to stop,” he said.

Searching for Answers

McClung first tried medication, but the results were short-lived. He was referred to William Young, MD, a urologist at Cumberland Specialty Group, to discuss treatment options.

“I am not a surgery person until it’s absolutely necessary,” McClung said.

But after months of frustration, he was ready for a solution that did not require ongoing medication.

“It just got too frustrating,” he explained.

Aquablation Therapy Technology

Aquablation therapy is an advanced, minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. The Aquablation HYDROS™ surgical system uses image-guided, robotic technology powered by artificial intelligence and heat-free water therapy to precisely remove excess prostate tissue.

This non-thermal approach helps relieve inflammation and improves bladder function, significantly reducing the need for frequent bathroom trips. It is designed for men age 45 and older who experience symptoms of BPH, including frequent urination.

“This technology allows us to personalize treatment for each patient while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue,” said Dr. Young. “For many men, that means effective symptom relief with fewer side effects and a faster recovery.”

For many patients, Aquablation therapy can also reduce the need for long-term medication use while delivering lasting relief.

A Fast Recovery

For McClung, Aquablation therapy made a significant impact. He stayed one night in the hospital and quickly noticed improvements. He shared, “This was one of the easiest things I’ve ever healed from.”

McClung was grateful to work with Dr. Young and the Cumberland care team through it all. “He’s very easy to talk to,” McClung said. “He explains everything so you can understand it.”

“The nurses were very courteous and very considerate. Anything I needed, they were quick to help.”

Life Without the Constant Worry

Today, McClung is able to enjoy his daily routines without the constant interruption of symptoms. “I don’t have that burden tagging along anymore,” he said.

Whether at work or spending time outdoors, he no longer has to plan his day around frequent stops. He shared, “I feel like I’m getting back to normal.”

Looking back, McClung encourages others not to wait.

“Don’t be afraid of the surgery,” he said. “If I knew then what I know now, I would have done it sooner.”
