A woman thinks intently while staring at a glass wall with a bunch of sticky notes.

As a leader at Covenant Health, we’ve committed to doing everything with excellence. While it can be easy to evaluate our work tasks and outcomes, our softer skills can be a little harder to evaluate. But more than often, it’s these skills that are most impactful to team engagement. Here’s a quick reflection –

Preface each question below with “Am I doing my BEST to…

  • Welcome my new team members?
  • Get to know my team members – personal preferences, who makes up their family, what they love to do, what they are good at?
  • Set clear expectations for attitudes, behaviors, and processes using the “tell, show, do, review” model?
  • Work elbow to elbow with my new team member until they have a solid foundation and knowledge of what success looks like?
  • Ensure my team members have what they need to be successful?
  • Listen to the ideas of my team members and let them lead the way in making improvements?
  • Create a positive environment?
  • Build bridges and collaborate with other departments?
  • Stay in tune with team members to know when I need to help more and when I need to let them be?
  • Develop team members that I envision succeeding me or other leaders on our team?
  • Partner newer team members with experienced team members, creating a mentoring structure for the team?
  • Regularly seek feedback on how I’m leading and what I could improve on?

Make a special effort this week to focus on 1-2 areas. Map out a plan for weaving these leadership behaviors into your daily routine and interactions with your team members.
