Gone are the days where leaders were simply decision-makers, now leaders must provide instruction, inspiration, and flexibility in a dynamic workspace. Becoming a visionary leader is a great challenge, but there are key traits that this type of leader must possess. Raymound Cattell’s 1954 foundational leadership psychology work called Leadership Potential Equation, outlines these traits according to research on leaders in the military. They include:

  • Emotional stability: Leaders must manage stress and frustration effectively, maintaining composure and psychological maturity in challenging situations.
  • Dominance: Effective leaders are decisive, competitive, and assertive, often enjoying the challenge of overcoming obstacles.
  • Enthusiasm: Leaders are energetic, optimistic, and open to change, displaying a quick and expressive demeanor that inspires others.
  • Conscientiousness: A strong sense of duty drives leaders to uphold high standards of excellence, order, and self-discipline.
  • Social boldness: Leaders are spontaneous risk-takers with emotional stamina, showing resilience and responsiveness in social interactions.
  • Self-assurance: Confidence and resiliency are hallmarks of leadership. They enable leaders to move forward without being weighed down by past mistakes or seeking constant approval.
  • Compulsiveness: Effective leaders are meticulous, socially aware, and deliberate in their decisions, ensuring their actions align with their values and reputation.
  • Intuitiveness: Given the complexities of the modern world, leaders increasingly rely on intuition and gut instincts when logic and reasoning fail.
  • Empathy: The ability to understand and relate to others fosters trust, which is crucial for inspiring employees to give their best efforts.
  • Charisma: Leaders with charisma captivate and motivate others by uniting them around a compelling vision, tying personal rewards and values to collective goals.

Mastering each one of these characteristics might seem overwhelming, but leadership is a continuous journey of growth. Through experience, education, and effort, anyone can develop the traits needed to inspire, instruct, and achieve success. The first step is building self-awareness – understanding where to begin. Tools and resources like a 360° feedback review, a PDP assessment, one-on-one coaching, and LLD classes can help you identify priorities and create a clear path forward.
