A nurse at Parkwest Medical Center recently received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the “superhuman” efforts nurses give every day.

Congratulations to Matthew Pack, a nurse on our stepdown unit, 2 Montvue. Matt was nominated by two separate individuals for the compassion and professionalism their parents received while in his care on 2 Montvue.

Matt’s Nomination

“Matt’s superb care of my 95 year old father was unparalleled. Not only did he relate to my dad in a caring and professional way, but also on a personal level to intuitively assess the best way to treat him. Because of his age and health issues, my dad was difficult to handle. Matt quickly developed a relationship in which my dad trusted and listened to him regarding his care. The job he did and the lengths Matt went to in providing the best care for him were truly miraculous. He was there every time and issue arose keeping my dad safe and calm during the duration of his time with him. I was able to go home and sleep some because Matt was his nurse.

His passion, commitment and care for his patients is like nothing we have ever experienced. And we have encountered MANY healthcare professionals in my dad’s advanced age. This is why Matt deserves the DAISY Award. He was dialed in and always calm and encouraging. The joy and passion he exudes for his job together with his gift of meeting his patient right where they are and encouraging progress in such a relatible and kind way was truly remarkable. He is a true gem and an example of what nursing should be.”

Nominated by: Terri, Patient’s Daughter

“My sister was in the hospital weeks at a time over the past year and a half. She passed away in April. Now my father-in-law is a patient here in critical condition. Matt has been a true blessing to our family. He takes time to explain what is going on, and does his best to make sure we understand. Today my father-in-law coded, and he is back in CCU on a ventilator. Matt was very quick to realize there was something wrong. He immediately got the help that dad needed. Tonight, dad is responding to us and we still have him with us. Matt also helped with our mom. She is a recent kidney transplant patient. When dad coded she went into shock. Matt helped talk to her and explain things to her. Tonight she is lying by dad in a recliner holding his hand. I know we aren’t out of the woods yet, but we still have our parents with us tonight. He is a very special nurse and will always hold a special place in our family. Thank you so much, Matt.
