Who is Covenant Health?

Posted on July 26, 2018

Covenant Health’s mission is to improve the quality of life in our community through better health. Our “community” extends from the Smoky Mountains to the Cumberland Gap and west to the Cumberland Plateau, and even beyond the surrounding region. Headquartered in Knoxville, our not-for-profit health system is locally owned and governed by a volunteer board of directors. But who – and what – is Covenant Health?

We are hospitals. We have nine acute-care hospitals providing surgery, emergency care, diagnostics, and many medical specialties. These facilities also comprise Covenant Health’s stroke hospital network, giving our region local access to rapid stroke care and the latest treatment innovations at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, an accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center. We also operate Peninsula Hospital, a division of Parkwest Medical Center and a long-standing community resource for behavioral and mental health services.

We are providers of specialized care. Our Thompson Cancer Network offers advanced cancer treatment and technology, support services for patients and families, and clinical trials. Peninsula also provides outpatient behavioral services, and our homecare division serves nearly 5,000 patients annually. The Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center provides comprehensive rehabilitation for stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury and other conditions, and touches the lives of patients from around the country. Covenant Therapy Centers offers outpatient rehabilitation at a dozen sites, and we have more cardiopulmonary rehab locations than any area healthcare provider.

We are 10,000 employees strong. Our employees contribute their talents and expertise in both patient care and administrative operations, and we collaborate in sharing best practices across our system. Forbes magazine has named Covenant Health among America’s Best Employers for three years in a row.

We are physicians. Covenant Health has nearly 1,500 affiliated physicians, including more than 170 Covenant Medical Group physicians at about 100 practice locations. CMG also includes more than 90 nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

We invest in future healthcare professionals. We partner with more than a dozen postsecondary schools to provide clinical experiences for healthcare students. Our hospitals serve as rotation sites for medical students from Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine.

We contribute to our communities. We’ve invested more than $1.3 billion in facilities and technology for our communities since 2000. We contributed approximately $278 million in charity care, uncompensated care and subsidized care in 2017, and we’ve contributed nearly $3 billion in employees, salaries and benefits in the last five years. We sponsor the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon and we support HonorAir Knoxville, The Change Center, and other charitable organizations.

Most importantly, we are committed to Covenant Health’s pledge of excellence:

The patient always comes first;

Excellence in everything we do;

Covenant Health will be the first and best choice.

We are truly grateful for the privilege of serving local communities and more than a million patients and their families each year. We are Covenant Health.
