Manual therapy involves specific hands-on techniques designed to reduce pain, and increase joint mobility and range of motion. It is most often used for musculoskeletal disorders such as chronic back pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and soft tissue injuries, such as strains, headaches, tightness following surgery, etc.
When performing soft tissue work, therapists apply pressure to the soft tissues of the body, such as the muscles. This pressure can help relax muscles, increase circulation, break up scar tissue, and reduce or eliminate soft tissue inflammation or swelling.
With manual therapy, clinicians also commonly mobilize and manipulate joints. These techniques help reduce pain, correct joint mechanics and allow for early return to exercises and daily function.
