Parkwest Team Has Performed over 1,000 TAVR Procedures

Parkwest Valve Center: (865) 373-7942

For high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis, open heart surgery is a dangerous solution to a painful problem. However, Parkwest offers an alternative for these patients: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). In this procedure, blocked valves are replaced endovascularly using a small wire.

Covenant Health was the first healthcare network in Knoxville to have surgeons trained in TAVR, and began these procedures in 2012. In the summer of 2019, the TAVR team at Parkwest performed their 500th TAVR procedure.

In the United States, TAVR continues to be studied as part of the PARTNER (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valves) trial which studied inoperable patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. Compared to standard medical care, the procedure reduced their absolute risk of dying from 50 percent to 30 percent.

If you have been diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis and have been deemed inoperable or too high risk for traditional surgery, you may be a candidate for the TAVR procedure. Please call the Parkwest Valve Center at (865) 373-7942 to make an appointment. A referral from your regular physician or cardiologist is recommended, but not required.

The Parkwest Valve Center is located next door to Parkwest Medical Center, in the Physician’s Plaza, at 9330 Park West Blvd., Suite 100, Knoxville, TN 37923.
