Packing a Backpack

Exercise is an important part of keeping healthy. Encouraging healthy lifestyles in children and adolescents is important for when they grow older. Lifestyles that are learned in childhood are more likely to stay with the child into adulthood. Some changes in lifestyle can be harder to make as a person ages. The best way to promote healthy lifestyles is for the whole family to become involved.

If you’re hitting the trail for the day, you’ll have a trek that’s safer and more successful if you pack these items in your backpack.

For energy:

  • Water
  • Lunch/Dinner (nothing too rich or greasy)
  • Snacks
  • Extra bag (for your trash)

For comfort:

  • Moleskin (to prevent blisters)
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Wet wipes
  • An extra pair of socks/gloves
  • Rain poncho

A prepared hiker is a happier hiker. Maybe you won’t need these items, but take them in case you do…

For safety:

  • Map
  • Bandaids
  • Hand sanitizer (can be used for cleaning scrapes)
  • Flashlight
  • Firestarter
  • Whistle

And a few optional items just for fun!

  • A camera
  • A journal
  • Water shoes
  • A spirit of adventure!
