The role of the patient navigator is to help coordinate medical care after a patient is diagnosed with cancer. Patient navigators provide help with appointments, answer questions and connect patients with additional support from outside organizations. Early therapeutic intervention during or after cancer treatment can be critical to a successful recovery. Therapists trained in specialized treatments for lymphedema, speech and swallowing issues, as well as physical therapy help patients achieve the best recovery options possible. While not the norm, the powerful treatments needed to fight cancer can sometimes cause side effects that need specialized wound care. Adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy following radiation treatment for cancer can be extremely effective in treating damaged tissue and promoting the growth of new blood vessel activity and healthy tissue. Methodist’s cancer services are sought out by people from throughout the region and our Hospitality Houses were created to help ease the emotional and financial burdens of being far away from home during treatment.
