While advancements in radiation therapy help to target cancerous tumors and affected areas with a greater sense of accuracy, normal tissue can still be impacted by the treatment. Fortunately, the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can provide significant healing treatments for those dealing with a radiation injury. Learn more about the use of HBO therapy with Kristie Teffetteller, director of the Methodist Wound Treatment Center and clinical manager, Michelle Bailey, RN. Health Night will take place on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Ridge Conference Room of Methodist Medical Center located at 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of several advanced treatment options offered at the Methodist Wound Treatment Center. This specialized treatment works in three major ways: It stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, improves the flow of oxygen into tissues, and increases the formation fibrous tissues. In short, HBO therapy allows for an increase of 10 times in plasma oxygen concentration, thereby accelerating the wound healing process. It is the only modality proven to effectively treat radiation wounds.
Health Night on the Town is an ongoing medical lecture series presented by physicians and other healthcare professionals. It is free and open to the public.
