CMC Hike to Recovery Series for Cancer Patients, Survivors

Exercise is vital in cancer recovery and prevention. According to the American Cancer Society, physical exercise during cancer treatment can help improve physical mobility and overall wellbeing.

In support of helping local cancer patients and survivors achieve the benefits of exercise, Cumberland Medical Center has partnered with Crossville Parks & Recreation Department, Cumberland Mountain State Park, Friends of the Trails, and St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church to help host nearly 50 guided hikes during the months of June, July, and August. There is no cost to participate.

“Research shows patients undergoing treatment for cancer benefit tremendously from physical activity,” says Tom Rally, CMC Cancer Center Manager. “Exercise helps patients in several ways such as improving their tolerance with treatments, reducing chances of reoccurrence, keeping muscles strong, and improving bone strength.”

When hiking, it’s important to be prepared. Look to the weather forecast and dress accordingly with comfortable clothing and shoes, take water and a light snack, and wear sunscreen. One may also want to wear insect repellent.
