- About Us
Last month, we were able to honor not just one but TWO MMCers for the DAISY award which recognizes nurses who provide extraordinary care. For those who might not be familiar, the DAISY Award is an international nurse recognition program that celebrates the compassion and skills nurses bring to patients and families every day. We launched our DAISY program here at Methodist Medical Center in 2018 and it was a distinct pleasure to close out 2019 by recognizing Audra Hovater and Luke Johnson as our latest honorees.
An excerpt from Audra’s nomination:
“When I or my husband had questions, she would not hesitate to STOP and speak with us. We never felt rushed, or made to feel like our concerns didn’t matter. When anyone is in the hospital – hurting and hooked up to so many things, it’s so unbelievable to feel like all of the caregivers have such heart!”
An excerpt from Luke’s nomination:
“Even though Luke was assigned to another floor that night, he stopped by Dad’s room to check on him! Certainly something he did not have to do! As a nurse myself, it’s easy to do one of two things: 1) See only the negative, wondering why more wasn’t done; or 2) understand the limits of the healthcare workers and know what they are dealing with. I hope I only chose the second option while we were there as that is what I aimed for. Thank you, Luke, for such compassion and the obvious love you have for the care of not only the patient, but the entire family as well.”
DAISY Details
The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient, J. Patrick Barnes, who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days. At a surprise reception, our winners receive:
- A certificate
- A DAISY award pin
- A unique, hand-carved sculpture from Zimbabwe entitled “A Healer’s Touch”
- A bouquet of daisies
- A Cinnabon cinnamon roll (Patrick’s favorite food)
Nurses may be nominated by patients and families, and they are chosen by a committee at Methodist Medical Center to receive The DAISY Award. To nominate a nurse today visit here.
